Why choosing the right material matters
Selecting the right filament for outdoor applications is crucial. You need to consider factors like UV radiation, moisture resistance, chemical resistance, and more. You want your print to last as long as possible without fading or becoming brittle.
1. ASA: The weather-resistant choice
ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is generally the best 3D printing material for outdoor use. It’s a water-resistant filament that also stands up to UV radiation. Plus, it handles high temperatures well. ASA is also highly wear-resistant and very strong, making it a durable choice.
This makes it an ideal printing material for outdoors. The downside is that it’s a relatively expensive material. While you can get PLA for €24-€30 per kilo, ASA typically costs around €34-€45. Another drawback is that you have fewer color options with ASA compared to something like PLA.
2. PETG: strong and flexible
PETG is a solid choice for outdoor use. It’s water and heat-resistant, but unlike ASA, it isn't UV-resistant. You could call it UV-stable. It can handle temperatures ranging from -40°C up to 70°C.
In terms of shrinkage and warping, ASA performs better than PETG.
3. Nylon12 (PA12): Durable and wear-resistant
PA stands for polyamide, which is the chemical name for nylonThis specific type of print material is suitable for outdoor use. It is highly resistant to chemicals, offers good wear resistance, and is reasonably weather-resistant. It can withstand temperatures up to approximately 90 degrees.
It is also easy to post-process and paint. All these properties make it a great choice as a print material for outdoor applications.
Frequently asked questions about 3D printing material and outdoor use
- What are the best 3D printing materials for outdoor use?
ASA, PETG, and Nylon12 (PA12) are the best 3D printing materials for outdoor use. - Is PLA weather-resistant?
PLA is not suitable for outdoor use. It is moisture-absorbent. This isn't a problem in the short term, but it is in the long run. - Is PETG weather-resistant?
This varies by brand and formulation, but in general, PETG is a good choice for outdoor use. It is resistant to UV radiation, water, and chemicals. It handles heat better than PLA, though not as well as ABS.
